There were certainly two Murphy in the Irish Brigade. There is a lot of confusion as to which was which. One was in Connaught Rangers, the other in Royal Irish Regt. The John Murphy in Connaught Rangers is the right man, as he is on Connaught Rangers Zossens list with that service number. So Daniel Murphy would appear to be in Royal Irish Regiment and from Gorey, Wexford.
Casement gives his pre-enlistment job as a labourer. Mahoney has a Murphy J of Royal Irish and a Murphy D of Connaught Rangers. It would appear that I have the right Murphy in John Murphy in Connaught Rangers (from his service record), so assuming Mahony got the initials the wrong way round then Daniel Murphy should be in Royal Irish, which would tie to Keogh's recollection and Keogh saying Murphy was born in Wexford.. The deposition on Sweeneys death was given to the British authorities by Daniel Murphy. Oddly that of Scanlon's death by J Murphy (in his service record).
1914 Taken prisoner, and followed the rest of the Irish Brigade through Limburg, Zossen and Danzig
1915 Dec volunteered for Egypt
1919 Feb 21 He is at Tutzig, where he sees the death of Patrick Sweeney

1926 Death of Daniel Murphy in Dublin South, death registered Apr - Jun 1926, Estimated Birth Year: 1875, Age (at Death): 51 Volume: 2, Page : 348. Keogh believes that "Patrick Murphy, born, Belfast* died in St James St Workhouse, Dublin. Buried in a paupers grave according to Keogh. It is possible that Keogh has the two Murphys mixed up and the paupers grave was filled by the other Murphy, who was an alcoholic, and might have been expected to die fairly soon after WW1 and in penuary.
